NW Trail Alliance President Tom Archer responds to illegal trail
BikePortland.org &bull Feb 24, 2010
In light of the discovery of an unauthorized bike trail in the northern reaches of Forest Park, I spoke about the situation this morning with Tom Archer, President of the non-profit off-road advocacy group the Northwest Trail Alliance. Archer was clearly disappointed by the discovery and expressed hope that attention on this incident will not distract from the ongoing effort to increase off-road trail riding opportunities in the region. (Archer is a member of the Forest Park Single Track Cycling Committee formed by City Parks Commissioner Nick Fish.) Its obvious we condemn it; but the question remains, what are we… Full Story »

Showcase: Specialized Bicycles - Mountain Bikes and Gear
Mountain Biking by 198 &bull Feb 24, 2010
Specialized Bicycles and mountain bikes are two terms that have been together almost since the beginning of fat tire obsession. Back in 1981, Specialized Bicycles released the StumpJumper to the general public and the mountain bike industry was born. While other companies (Joe Breeze) had led the revolution, Specialized brought mountain biking to the general public and started the revolution that we all take part in today. Referred to in some circles as the Big S, Specialized has carved a permanent spot in the mountain biking community that some riders love and others love to hate. Regardless of your personal… Full Story »

Buyer's guide to suspension forks
Bikeradar.com &bull Feb 23, 2010
Staff at our sister publication Mountain Biking UK have just conducted a suspension fork supertest where they put 14 of the top trail forks head to head. The first question is what travel will work best for you. All other things being equal, the further your fork can move, the more smoothly it can absorb impacts. But longer-legged forks have to be heavier to cope with the extra leverage and… Full Story »

20 Questions With Charlie Kelly
NSMB.com: Home Page &bull Feb 21, 2010
Charlie Kelly is no less than one of the founding fathers of the sport of mountain biking. He was there in the original days of the repack, riding converted cruiser bikes with drum brakes, steel rims and no hint of suspension. He was also a partner, along with Gary Fisher and Tom Ritchey, in a business venture they called 'Mountain Bikes.' Charlie calls himself the only 'funtionally literate' mountain biker from the early days and he published 'Fat Tire Flyer' - the only publication for off road riders until 1986.
